COBA employees have helped the New Year get off to a fabulous start for one needy crèche in Cape Town, South Africa by donating to their Christmas Toy Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of colleagues throughout the COBA International group of companies, a fantastic £300 was raised to buy the young children presents at SIKHULISA’S Toy Top Crèche.

Cape Town based COBA Plastics (Pty) Ltd even managed to organise a visit by Santa, complete with ‘assistant COBA Elf’ in the shape of Mfundo (who helped with the translation), to hand out the gifts which they had wrapped for the children!

The money raised was used to buy fun, yet educational items such as chalk boards, puzzles, alphabet shape boards and books.

“The children were completed overawed. They couldn’t believe their eyes when they were each given a beautifully wrapped present by a rather familiar looking Santa to take home – in fact, they have so little they didn’t even initially know how to unwrap the presents and simply held on to them in amazement,” says Quality Systems Manager - Peter Farquhar of COBA Plastics (Pty) Ltd.

The whole company joined in the spirit of the occasion which was wonderful and a huge thank you to all those who so generously donated to this cause. As Charlene Petzer, Financial Manager - COBA Plastics (Pty) Ltd says, “Truly amazing, it will help these children more than we can ever imagine, thank you to everyone.”

There’s been much publicity about ‘Movember’ (the month formerly known as November thanks to the Movember Campaign) when even the most clean-shaven men have been sprouting moustaches to raise awareness and funds for male health, specifically prostate and other cancers that affect men.

From celebrities to television presenters and sportsmen, everyone has been doing it for Movember. Not to be outdone, we’re pleased to say that some of our willing guys from COBA Europe and COBA Plastics decided to join the ‘tache’ growing community sporting facial hair previously unseen by their colleagues!

In true COBA competitive spirit, they even decided to create their own teams, quite literally in a face to face contest. Sam Elliott, Stefan Georges, Liam O’Driscoll and Gary Evans donned their whiskers for The COBA Bangers, while Colin O’Toole and Daniel George made up the modestly named COBA Hairlips. They started on 1st November and the photo shows the culmination of their moustache growing efforts by 30 November, some definitely a little hairier than others. Good on them because between them they have raised just under £1000 for this cause. An amazing amount indeed.

The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male specific cancers - prostate and testicular cancer. The funds raised are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research. Fanny started her career at COBA back in 1997, as a receptionist for the business. Over the course of the years she has demonstrated skill, courage, determination and professionalism which has seen her conduct roles in various business disciplines. This has included telesales support for our matting business and visits to export customers in France, supporting the company Directors.

In 2003 Fanny became part of the core team and indeed a "super user" working on the IFS ERP system integration at COBA – a system now widely used across our group. Following on from this Fanny moved into the purchasing arena where her skills set is definitely most suited. She has now taken over the commercial negotiation responsibilities for our main raw material and serial production biased suppliers, as well as our major supply contracts for areas such as energy supplies, telephones and many of our general contractors.

This latest company promotion comes as recognition of her performance over the last 18 months in her role of Senior Buyer. Moving to the future, Fanny will continue to expand her role in the business, working more strategically with our main suppliers on longer term challenges and opportunities. Fanny will continue to be supported by Mick Kempster in COBA Plastics and Dean Hayden in Copely Developments.

Having joined the company in December 2009, Emanuel (who shares German and Greek nationality) has used his extensive knowledge of automotive engineering and sales to secure high volumes of new business in Germany in the automotive seating sector for COBA Plastics Ltd.

This new business has brought with it a number of significant automotive contracts in Germany. This has spearheaded some exciting product development and component supply projects for major automotive manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW, Ford, Porsche and Daimler.

"Emanuel's promotion is a direct result of his success and efforts in delivering substantial sales growth for COBA Plastics in the German automotive market. This new responsibility will see him develop this business further as he continues to build on these key relationships through efficient, proactive CRM and sales support in general," explains Nick Wood, European Sales Manager – COBA Plastics Ltd.

As Key Account Manager, Emanuel's role concentrates on key German based customers, to whom he will be providing informed technical and commercial support without communication problems caused by language barriers. His responsibility also extends to establishing new key automotive account business for COBA Plastics within Germany.

"I am pleased to evolve my role at COBA Plastics and to be part of such a dynamic international company that continues to increase its market share as a global supplier and project partner to the automotive seating sector," comments Emanuel who continues to operate out of his Ansbach based office near Nürnberg in Germany.

To help be PART OF THE CURE and to support the many thousands of people affected by breast cancer (that is 1 in 8 women in the UK) our COBA colleagues each donated £2 to Wear it Pink for the day and raised £95.44 for the Breast Cancer Campaign.

And, as our photo shows, it wasn’t just the girls that were sporting pink! Our COBA guys needed little persuasion to enter into the spirit of the day too!

Money raised will help the charity contribute towards invaluable research (it currently supports 101 research projects in 34 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland) to help save and improve lives, and ultimately find a cure for breast cancer.

It’s not just ‘pink’ that COBA has been supporting too. Staff recently wore blue (this time denim!) to support Jeans for Genes Day, another fantastic charity helping children with genetic disorders. We raised £61.

It was a fun and simple way to support two serious campaigns. Thank you to everyone who donated.

New Project Managers Strengthen COBA's Capabilities

COBA has recently restructured its Project Management team through the promotion of two experienced employees who now both take on specific Project Manager roles with responsibility for Automotive Seating and Technical Products, the latter of which spans both automotive seals and non-automotive products. Since implementing this change, this is already proving beneficial to both COBA and our customers through greater efficiencies and improved communication taking new projects into serial production.

Keith Jupp, who has previously been a Quality Engineer for COBA for last two years experienced in continuous development and customer support, now takes on the role of Project Manager (Seating). Keith says, “I am pleased to be given this opportunity to be involved in new projects from development to delivery and with this, the satisfaction that comes with seeing a product released.”

Meanwhile former Program Engineer, Andy Lucas now fills the position of Project Manager (Technical Products) having worked for the company for some eight years. Andy has a sound knowledge of effective engineering work-plan management, using ETF systems and MS Project plans with past project management experience.

“I am thoroughly enjoying this new role,” says Andy. “It is allowing me to fully utilize my core skills and knowledge which I have developed throughout my career. I am looking forward to effectively managing and launching more technically challenging products for the business.”

This restructuring is already enabling COBA’s Project Managers to work with our customers at a much earlier phase of the project to establish good working relationships and a sound understanding of customer requirements from the outset. In short, these project management roles ensure that products are delivered to the specification and quality required, on time and to budget for optimum levels of customer satisfaction.

While Andy and Keith still report to Nick Wood and Chris Richmond in the Sales Team, they both take responsibility for the planning and execution of all related new business in their respective ‘technical’ or ‘seating’ projects, ensuring that customer requirements are communicated to relevant COBA departments and of course, to our suppliers. They also oversee the quality control/APQP area of each project, ETF (Engineering Trial Feasibility) forms and the manufacture of prototype parts as well as NPC (New Product Control).

Speaking on the restructuring, COBA’s European Sales Manager, Nick Wood, says: “We are already receiving positive feedback from both our automotive seating and technical product customers. Andy and Keith’s roles as Project Managers in these fields further strengthen our capabilities to introduce larger projects into production and support our growth strategies going forwards.”
